Limerick Manager John Kiely and Tipperary TD Jackie Cahill are the latest to call on the GAA to allow the Tipperary and Limerick teams to wear jerseys bearing the logo of the Dillon Quirke Foundation during their Munster Championship game. The GAA has banned the addition of messages from charities and campaigns on playing gear. The Foundation is established in memory of the Clonoulty Rossmore and Tipperary Star who died on August 6th 2022 during a match at Semple stadium. Mr Kiely says this makes his case a unique one that the GAA officials should make an exception for and adds that Limerick will do whatever is possible to honour Dillon Quirke and support the Foundation.
Deputy Jackie Cahill is also calling on the GAA to reverse the decision. The Thurles based TD says the decision has caused disappointment and even anger locally. Deputy Cahill praised the Foundation which he says is doing vital work on a national level. The decision is at odds with the grassroots community ethos of the GAA according to Deputy Cahill who says the GAA needs to listen to its members
The Foundation intended to auction the jerseys to raise funds towards providing heart health screening for GAA members over the age of 12. The Tipperary v’s Limerick game is set for May 21s at 4pm in Semple Stadium – a date that possibly allows time for a reversal of the decision by the GAA.
