Building of the new Garda Station in Clonmel could start in the next year according to the Taoiseach if work to put some new legal arrangements can be successfully completed and some spending can be brought forward.

Taoiseach Varadkar was responding to Tipperary TD Mattie McGrath in the Dáil who asked that the project which is part of larger Public Private Partnership to deliver new Garda stations in Clonmel and Macroom alongside a new Children’s Court building in Dublin could be restructured.

The Taoiseach says he has had representations on the Clonmel station from other Tipperary Public Representatives including Deputy Michael Lowry, Jackie Cahill and Senator Garret Ahearn.

The new station was promised over 8 years ago and has planning permission to commence construction at the former Kickham Barracks site.

An Taoiseach informed the Dáil that a further meeting involving all stakeholders is expected to take place this week.
