A request from the Tipp Cahir Cashel Municipal District Council is to be sent to the Court Service to request the restoration of the District Court sitting in Tipperary Town.  The request   was unanimously agreed at today’s meeting on foot of a motion from Cllr Anne Marie Ryan.  The District Court sitting was moved to Nenagh at the begin of the pandemic – at the time the court was sitting at the Excel Centre due to the poor condition of the courthouse.

Since then the Revitalisation Task Force has completed a Conservation plan for the Courthouse building on St Michael’s Street.  A new roof has been installed on the building and the exterior repainted in 2022. Further work on the building may be required before court sitting could resume at the court house.

Cllr Ryan says a venue for court sittings can be found in the town and mentioned the Department of Justice building on Rosanna Road, the Excel Centre or the Courthouse building as possible locations. Cllr Ryan says it is wrong that Tipperary town does not host it’s own court sitting which is causing backlogs and additional stress to people involved in court proceedings. Restoring the service in Tipperary town will also be beneficial  for  Garda personnel  and the legal profession  currently obliged to travel to Nenagh.

The Meeting heard today that the administrative office for Tipperary District Court is based in Clonmel. Tipperary town  Courthouse is a Protected Structure (RPS ID 17) and is listed on the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage (Reg No 22108017). It dates from circa 1839 with later additions.
