Today marks the one-year anniversary of the Russian invasion into Ukraine. The war has caused destruction, deaths and displacement of millions of people. It has also sparked an energy crisis, concerns about food security and the possible use of nuclear weapons. The war looks set to intensify in the coming months as both sides secure additional military resources and no peace talks are in progress. Ukraine is expecting an increase in attacks today. Russia holds around 16% of the lands in the east and south of Ukraine at present.

Ireland’s foreign Minister and Tánaiste,  Micheal Martin is to attend an event at the GPO today organised by members of the Ukrainian community in Ireland. This week it was announced that Ireland will send 30 members of the Defence forces to train members of the Ukraine army in methods of safely removing mines. The training is expected to take place in Poland. Almost 80,000 refugees from Ukraine are now living in Ireland with the state providing accommodation and building modular houses to accommodate refugees in some areas including Thurles were 62 houses are under construction. County Tipperary is also providing two reception centres for refugees in Littleton and Clonmel.
