Four of the five Tipperary TDs voted against the Mother and Baby Homes Redress Legislation last night in the Dáil the Bill was approved due to the Government majority with the final vote 73 in favour and 62 against.
Deputy Jackie Cahill supported the Legislation which has been criticised by opposition TDs and campaigners for survivors as it excludes an estimated 24,000 people.
Those that are excluded include people that spent less than 6 months in such institutions, some children that were boarded out and some children that were adopted.
A Government spokesperson says the Government is providing €800M in the redress scheme as outlined which is expected to provide a payment and other supports to approximately 34,000 people.
The Bill will now go to the Seanad. Campaigners for the survivors expect that there may be legal cases taken on behalf of those that are excluded.
Galway west TD Catherine Connolly was not able to participate in the Debate as she became unwell – she has been a vocal and consistent campaigner on behalf of the survivors.
