Councillor Declan Burgess, Fine Gael, has sharply criticised the Government on their indication that they will not maintain the 9% VAT rate for the Hospitality sector.
The Cashel based Councillor describes the government stance as short-sighted and says it will have a detrimental effect on employment and cause many small independent businesses to close.
Cllr Burgess says he has reached out to senior levels of government to voice his opposition to this proposal as he says coping with energy costs and inflation in general is pushing many operations close to closure and job losses.
Cashel town is focused on becoming a major destination town for tourists and the Cllr says now is not the right time for a VAT increase and is calling for common sense to prevail.
A Cabinet sub committee is to consider the issue today – Finance Minister Michael McGrath says retaining the 9% rate for 2023 could see the Exchequer lose out on €500M in revenue
