Tipperary TD Michael Lowry is calling for ‘robust legislation’ to enforce responsible dog ownership as reports show an estimated 3,000 sheep are killed or injured annually by dogs including 50 sheep killed on a farm near Lorrha in late December 2022. The TD accused dog owners of failing in their responsibility to keep their animals under control. The TD also referenced cases of a woman in Carrick on Suir attacked by dogs and jumping into the river Suir to escape and the increase in incidents involving children.
Deputy Lowry wants stronger laws around dog control and greater enforcement. Responding for the Government An Tánaiste Micheal Martin agreed and pointed to the establishment of a working group involving both the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Rural and Community Development to devise proposals to improve all aspects of Dog Control in Ireland. The Tánaiste says the Government is awaiting recommendations from the working group.
