Homelessness Continues To Increase Across Ireland

The number of people in homelessness increased again in December.

The Department of Housing today released the data for the final month of 2022 which reveals that there were 11,632 people supported by the State to find accommodation, an increase of 90 compared to November 2022.

3,442 children are included in the total number of people in emergency accommodation across Ireland for December 2022.

Across County Tipperary there has been a slight increase to 41 adults in homelessness – up from 40 in October.

Data for county Limerick shows a reduction of 10 persons down from 362 in November to 352 in December.

A total of 11,632 adults and children are now accommodated in emergency accommodation funded and overseen by housing authorities.

These figures represent people availing of supports and therefore may not be an accurate reflection of homelessness – those sleeping rough or living in overcrowded situations are not included.

Compared to December 2021 there is an overall increase of 2,715 or 30%.

In December 2021 there were 6,466 adults availing of homeless services – this has increased to 8,190 in December 2022.

In December 2021 there were 2,451 children in emergency accommodation – this figure increased to 3,442 in December 2022.
