The Argos Store in Clonmel is to close along with 33 other stores nationwide.

580 people are to lose their jobs in the process.

The stores are expected by close on June 24th this year.

Company management says the investment required to develop and modernise the Irish part of its business was not viable – the Irish operation recorded losses of €13.06 million in 2022.

Staff are to receive a generous redundancy package and a small number of staff not eligible for redundancy under Irish Law are expected to receive a one-off goodwill payment

As part of the business windup online operations will cease and customers in Ireland will no longer be able to pay for orders via the Argos website or place orders via its home delivery service after 22 March.

The Argos company is owned by the Sainsbury’s supermarket change – it purchased Argos for £1.1 billion in 2016. Since then Sainsbury’s have been closing standalone stores in the UK and opening outlets within it’s supermarkets.

Retail Excellence Ireland says  the news is disappointing and emphasises the fragility and the rapidly changing nature of the retail industry at present.
