The Irish Cattle and Sheep Farmers Association is calling for the government to acknowledge the sector is in crisis and take action to resolve it.
ICSA Sheep chair believes sheep farmers in Tipperary urgently need answers as to what support will be forthcoming as prices look set to plummet even further.
Sean McNamara says prices look set to dip below €6/kg this week which is a travesty when you consider how much a farmer’s input costs have gone up.
Mr McNamara is also concerned about the influx of New Zealand lamb into the EU as well as the continuous importation of UK lamb into Ireland which is driving local producers out of business
The ICSA rep says it’s important that processors show solidarity by factoring in the additional costs for sheep farmers and ignore it when setting the price,.
Mr McNamara is urging consumers to always choose locally produced Irish lamb.
