Traditional musician and singer Seamus Begley has died aged 73.
Mr Begley from West Kerry enjoyed a hugely successful career and was regarded as one of the country’s finest accordion players.
Begley left school at 12, and focused on playing at céilithe in local halls, including his father’s in Muirioch in Dingle.
His recording career began in 1973 – he later collaborated with Australian guitarist Steve Cooney and produced the award-winning album ‘Meitheal”.
Sharon Shannon has shared a video of Seamus made at Limerick Hospital on January 2nd as he recovered from a cardiac issue and paid tribute to his talent and personality saying “his family adored the ground he walked on and vice vearsa.”
Louise Morrissey described Seamus as a legend and said he visited her home in Tipperary to prepare for a performance at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville.
Séamus Begley is survived by his wife, Mary, his four children along with an extended musical family.
