There is strong expectation for Irish success at tonight’s Golden Globe Awards – the Banshees of Inisherin has 8 nominations. Actors Kerry Condon from Thurles, Brendan Gleeson, Barry Keoghan and Colin Farrell are also nominated as is Director Martin McDonagh who also devised the screenplay. The film is nominated for Best Picture and Carter Burwell is also recognised for his original score for the Banshees of Inisherin which features scenery from Achill Island and Inis Mor off the west coast of Ireland. Domhnall Gleeson, is also nominated for his performance in the psychological thriller TV series “The Patient.”
The Awards ceremony is attempting to recover from controversy last year when it emerged that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, then numbering 87 members, had no Black members, had paid its members some $3 million in annual salaries and was accused of ethical lapses in how the organisation regularly interacted with potential nominees. Reforms have been put in place and NBC is airing the Golden Globes this year on a Tuesday to assess public interest.
Comedian Jerrod Carmichael is hosting and actors Eddie Murphy and Ryan Murphy are set to receive tributes. Sean Penn will also introduce a message from Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
