A farmer based in Lorrha has suffered extensive losses to his sheep herd following an attack by dogs on December 26th. 45 sheep were killed outright during the attack and another 20 had to be put down given the nature of their injuries caused by bites to their head and throat. The farmer estimates that three or four dogs were involved. A further 4 sheep died on January 1st – 16 sheep are traumatised by their injuries and have been given treatment to prevent infections from developing. 43 hoggets survived but are not expected to thrive.
The farmer is calling for greater powers for Gardai and dog wardens. He also called on the dog owners to put down the animals saying they could attack again. Donal O’Donoghue and his wife Nuala paid tribute to their neighbours who came to help deal with the dead, injured and missing sheep. The financial impact of the loss is estimated to be between €10,000 – €11,000.
Garda in Nenagh are investigating the crime and can be contacted at 067 50450.
