Winter Solstice Marks Shortest Day Of The Year

423

Today marks the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year. This occurs when either of Earth’s poles reaches its maximum tilt away from the Sun.  TG4 will provide a live stream of the Winter Solstice Sunrise event from Newgrange at 8.45am. The stream will be available on TG4’s Facebook and www.TG4.ie.

During the pandemic the OPW provided a live stream of the event where the rising sun at this time of the year is able enter via a gap over the doorway to illuminate the inner chamber. It is hoped that the OPW will provide the service again next year. The OPW is allowing a limited number of people to be in the chamber after they entered a lottery for tickets.
