Shortlised Nominees For Tipp International Peace Award Revealed

Four shortlisted nominations for the Tipperary International Peace award have been released.

The overall winner will be revealed on January 1st 2023.

The nominees are Shahin Gavanji and Jahangir Gavanji – two award winning Iranian brothers and children’s rights activists, Ifrah Ahmed a Somali-Irish social activist – she is one of the world’s top female genital mutilation eradication advocates and founder of the United Youth of Ireland non-governmental organization and the Ifrah Foundation, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya the leader of Belarusian democratic forces – Sviatlana spent many summers in Roscrea as one of the “Chernobyl children”

The fourth and final nominee to be shortlisted is the Irish Defence Forces – Ireland has had a continuous presence on UN peace support operations since 1958.

The Tipperary International Peace Award was first awarded in 1984 to the late Seán McBride, one of the founders of Amnesty International.

In the years since 1984 the award has been awarded to a range of peacemakers and world leaders including; Nelson Mandela, Mikhail Gorbachev, Bill Clinton, Benazir Bhutto, Malala Yousafzai and to civil society campaigns such as the Cluster Munition Coalition.
