Rising Energy costs are being blamed for a decision to close the Sauna and Steam Room at the Canon Hayes Recreation Centre from next weekend. To date in 2022, the electricity bill is €24,000 and the gas bill is €8,000. Half of these costs goes towards heating the Sauna and Steam room, making them unviable during the winter given increasing costs. Overall the centre is breaking even financially at present and is currently servicing one loan. The Board of Management is anxious not to incur debt due to the energy crisis. The Board will also examine the 4 energy support schemes provided by the Government to avail of any possible financial support including the schemes for the voluntary and community sector announced last week which will make €338,885 available to organisations in County Tipperary. In all the Government has four energy support schemes – one for business, two for the voluntary and community sector and one dedicated to sporting organisations.
