A new Healthy Ireland initiative is to be formally launched in Clonmel this week.
Social Prescribing has been used in several communities already to help people to connect with community groups, services, clubs, activities and resources within a person’s community to help improve general health and wellbeing.
GP’s or Health professionals can offer social prescribing to complement a medical prescription and any agency can make a referral with a person’s consent or a person can self refer.
Clonmel Social Prescribing is a free service available to adults over 18 and living in Clonmel and is especially beneficial to those feeling lonely and isolated.
The service is provided by a full time person filling the role of “Social Prescribing Link Worker”.
The information afternoon will take place at the Talbot hotel in Clonmel on Thursday the 10th of November from 12.00 noon to 2pm.
The event will include an address from Mayor of Clonmel Borough District Mr Pat English, an opportunity to learn more about what social prescribing is, how people can get involved and the benefits it can have for an individual.
Author and ex Mountjoy Prison Governor John Lonergan will be the guest speaker.
Refreshments will also be provided and the organisers say all are welcome.
