A Tipperary farm leader has called for a different approach to be taken to the processing of repeat offenders. Pat Carroll the Chair of South Tipperary IFA was speaking at the Autumn meeting of the Tipperary Joint Policing Committee.
Mr Carroll wants the wider community to seek change in the judicial system so that there is more of a deterrent for those considering criminal activity. While supporting calls for additional Garda resources Mr Carroll questioned the waste of resources in detecting and prosecuting criminals with multiple offences and says “crime prevention” needs to be put into the justice and legal system rather than being the onus of citizens.
The dairy farmer called for the Oireacthas to review the sentencing policy at present and says the “revolving door system” is failing An Garda Siochana. Mr Carroll also encouraged property owners to mark their property with their Eircode and to attend next Monday’s webinar hosted by the IFA on Rural Crime Prevention measures.
