Tipperary County Council is advising the public to exercise caution on Lough Derg due to presence of Algal Bloom
The blue green algae bloom can produce harmful toxins and is most easily recognised when it forms a bright pea-green paint like scum on or close to the shoreline.
Contact with the bloom should be avoided as it may cause skin irritation.
The Public are also advised to keep all animals especially dogs away from the affected area and to ensure that animals have an alternative source of drinking water. This is the second time this month that the alert has been issued. Algae blooms can occur when a combination of suitable environmental conditions exist for abundant algal growth (e.g., increased nutrients, warmer temperature, abundant light, and stable wind conditions). Lough Derg is due to host Quest Lough Derg on September 10th when over 1,300 competitors are to kayak in the lake as part of their Quest.
