Several Tipp Gardaí Took Part In Force’s Centenary Celebration

Several Garda from county Tipperary took part in the Centenary Celebrations of An Garda Siochana held in Dublin on Saturday.

Garda Chris Verling Holycross, Inspector Brendan Franklin, Bray, Garda PJ O’Brien Templetuohy, Assistant Commissioner Michael Finn, Chief Superintendent Derek Smart, Superintendent Edmond Golden, Inspector Ailish Myles, Sergeant Donal Keogh and Sergeant Hilda Moloney of Tipperary Division all represented Tipperary at the event.

Events to mark the centenary of the founding of An Garda Siochana had been disrupted by the pandemic.

The event on Saturday saw 450 Garda march from the Gresham Hotel on O’Connell Street to Dublin Castle.

This marked the inaugural meeting of the Garda foundation committee held in the Gresham Hotel on Feb 9th 1922 under the chairmanship of Michael Staines who became the first Commissioner.

Commission Staines led the Garda into Dublin Castle on August 17th 1922 and oversaw the transfer of the castle from British rule.

The Minister for Justice Helen McEntee and Garda Commissioner Drew Harris also addressed the event on Saturday.
