Sinn Féin TD for Tipperary, Martin Browne is  warning that the Government has ‘lost control of  the housing market’, as new figures show that rents in Tipperary have soared to 1,089 euros.

The DAFT report records the highest rents to date and the lowest number of rental properties on the market since their records began.  Deputy Browne described the report as troubling.

The TD says he is inundated with families unable to find suitable accommodation at an affordable cost. Deputy Browne has accused the government of failing to deliver on housing and failing to grasp the extent of the crisis.

He pointed out that the Housing Minister is presiding over record highs in rents, house prices and homelessness as the delivery of social and affordable housing is well behind target and the private rental sector is shrinking.  Deputy Browne called on the Government to use September’s Budget to increase funding to deliver 20,000 social and affordable homes every year for the next decade. He also asked for emergency action to reduce homelessness and slow down the disorderly exit of landlords from the private rental sector.
