An off duty Garda based in County Tipperary helped save the life a young boy who had gotten into severe difficulty in the water at a Kerry beach.

The Kerryman Newspaper reports that Niall Deegan was on his holidays in Dingle and was swimming at the Com Dhíneol Beach where the incident happened last Thursday.

Speaking to the newspaper Mr Deegan says he wouldn’t be a great swimmer, but as father himself, he couldn’t stand by and watch as the situation unfolded.

Niall says the water current was dragging the boy out to sea quickly adding he was exhausted when he reached the boy, due to the rip-tide.

A surfer reached out the pair and both were brought back to shore safely.

Garda Deegan says as part of the job he dealt with many tragedies however the emotion of this incident was overwhelming.

As the heatwave continues Niall is warning others to be extra vigilant and careful when it comes to the sea.
