Tributes Are Being Paid To Tipp Hurler Dillon Quirke

Tributes are being paid to club and county hurling player Dillon Quirke following his tragic and sudden passing yesterday evening.

In a statement Tipperary GAA says Dillon became ill during Friday evenings County Senior Hurling Championship game between Clonoulty Rossmore and Kilruane MacDonaghs in Semple Stadium

He was taken to Tipperary University Hospital in Clonmel where he passed away.

The Tipperary GAA wish to thank all those who attended to Dillon in Semple Stadium and in Tipperary University Hospital.

Tipperary GAA extends its heartfelt and sincere sympathies to Dan, Hazel, Shannon, Kellie and the extended Quirke family. Also to the Clonoulty Rossmore GAA Club and his teammates on the sad and tragic passing of Clonoulty Rossmore and Tipperary hurler Dillon Quirke.

The Tipperary CCC has decided to call off all games under its jurisdiction this weekend as a mark of respect.

The Committee also sends its deepest sympathy to the Quirke family and the people of Clonoulty Rossmore.

Mr Quirke’s former school CBS Thurles says he was a great leader in school during his time with them and a wonderful role model for the boys in school over the past number of years. The secondary school says he was an absolute gentleman and competitor.

The Taoiseach says he’s shocked and saddened by the passing of Dillon Quirke, adding that his deepest sympathies to all his family, friends, his teammates, and all the community in Tipperary.

The President of Ireland says he wishes to express his deepest sympathies on the passing of Dillon Quirke. This is an inestimable loss not only to his family and friends but to his entire community to which he was making such a contribution. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

Kilruane McDonagh Club who were the other team on the field in Semple Stadium yesterday tweeted their sympathy to the Quirke Family and to Dillon’s club teammates.

Mr Lowry paid tribute to Dillon describing him as a popular and highly respected young man and a stalwart of his local Club and County teams. This year had seen him rise to the top  with the Tipperary Senior Hurlers and he wore the number 5 jersey with distinction and great pride.
