The Joint Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine will meet this evening to resume Pre-Legislative Scrutiny of the General Scheme of the Agricultural and Food Supply Chain Bill 2022. The bill is designed to deliver fair prices for food producers and greater transparency as to margins in the sector. Farming leaders have repeatedly called for such a measure to ensure there are fair margins between producers, processors and retailers. The legislation will establish a new authority called the National Food Ombudsman to enforce the Unfair Trading Practices Directive as required by the EU. The Committee is led by Tipperary TD Jackie Cahill and this evening the committee will first hear evidence from Representatives from the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission and then at 7pm Representatives from Retail Ireland will give a presentation.
