Two Co. Tipp Schools Granted DEIS Status After Appeal

There was some good news today for two Tipperary Schools who have successfully appealed the decision not to grant them DEIS Status.
Both Naomh Padriag Senior at Newtown, Drangan and St. John the Baptist Boys School at Old Road, Cashel have now both been granted DEIS status. The news has been welcomed by Tipperary TD Michael Lowry.
The Thurles based TD says both schools fit the criteria laid down for DEIS status and that he had made the Department aware of this on behalf of the schools. Deputy Lowry described the approvals as welcome news for the Management and staff at the schools and, even more so at this time, for the parents and pupils.
The DEIS programme is aimed at Delivering Equality of Opportunity in Schools by providing schools with DEIS status with additional resources including extra teachers and free school lunches. Schools in Cahir and Carrick on Suir have also submitted appeals in their bid for DEIS status. The outcome of these appeals is yet to be established.
