Government Divided Over When To Provide Cost Of Living Support

The government is said to be divided about when to provide supports to households suffering from the cost of living crisis.

The package being put together is likely not to be announced until the Budget in October but may be implemented quickly, possibly, in January 2024.

The measures include reduced childcare costs, a major support package via social protection payments and tax reductions.

It is thought that increases to social protection paymetns will be higher than 5 euro per week. Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe and Public Expenditure Minister Michael McGrath briefed the three government party leaders on the broad financial parameters for October’s Budget – the details will be published in the Summer Economic Statement in a few weeks.

A plan to allow students to earn up to €6,552 during the summer without impacting on their college grant is before cabinet today. The move will support students and may also assist with labour shortages especially in the hospitality sector.
