Thurles Based Councillors Jim Ryan, Seamas Hanafin and Sean Ryan have called on Tipperary County Council (TCC) to provide funding to support the operation of the Tourist Office in Thurles.
Cllr Ryan says the current office is run by a voluntary group and that this approach is not sustainable. Cllr Ryan asked that TCC examine if it could find funding or support an application to Fáilte Ireland for funding. The Tourist office is located in the former Tipperary GAA shop on Slievenamon Road and is adjacent to the Lár na Páirce GAA museum.
The director of Community and Enterprise section of TCC, Pat Slattery offered to invite Fáilte Ireland to visit the location. However he said that TCC does not provide funding for Tourist offices although the Municipal District Council might be able to provide some support. Mr Slattery says the council struggles to get Fáilte Ireland funding for tourist offices in Cahir, Cashel, the Fethard Horse Country Museum and Nenagh
