The Clonmel Rest Centre for Refugees received it’s first residents last night. The Facility at the Dr Pat O’Callaghan Sports Centre is to be managed by Clonmel Rotary Club and can accommodate 60 people.
Details of the Tipperary County Councils efforts to support refugees were shared with members at the Tipperary Public Participation Network plenary meeting in Thurles last night.
Tributes were paid to members of the Tipperary Civil Defence for their efforts in getting the two Tipperary Rest Centres in Littleton and Clonmel ready for use.
It is expected that the residents will remain at the rest centre in Clonmel for up to 5 days before going to more permanent accommodation.
Both centres have limited space to store resources so the importance of volunteers in restocking the centres and providing social support to the people arriving from Ukraine was stressed by Council officials.
Over 27000 refugees from Ukraine have now arrived in Ireland.
