The Labour Party has confirmed that Ivana Bacik is to take over as the leader of the party, replacing Tipperary TD Alan Kelly who resigned earlier this month.

The Dublin Bay South TD was the sole candidate nominated to fill the position left by Deputy Kelly.

Ms Bacik will take over as the party currently has 7 TDs in Dáil Eireann.

Deputy Bacik was first elected to the Dáil in a by-election last year.

Earlier this month, Deputy Alan Kelly announced that he was stepping down as party leader after two years as members of the parliamentary party expressed a lack of confidence in his leadership.

Deputy Kelly will continue as a TD for Tipperary and hopes to run again in the next election.
