Government to Discuss Accommodating Ukrainian Refugees in Ireland

An Taoiseach Michael Martin is expected to chair today’s Cabinet meeting by video link as he remains in the US following a positive covid test result.

The meeting will discuss the latest developments in respect of refugees from Ukraine.

Over 100,000 refugees may be accommodated in Ireland and the search for potential housing continues across Government departments and local authorities with planning laws expected to be set aside to find homes quickly.

Gardaí will soon be able to carry out vetting within seven days of perspective homes pledged by the public, however, this will only be required in cases where a child or vulnerable adult is being placed in shared accommodation.

Latest figures yesterday showed 9,762 refugees had arrived in Ireland from Ukraine in the past three weeks.

Today the Minister for Social Protection is to amend regulations to ensure the welfare payments of those accommodating Ukrainian people in their homes will not be affected.

It comes after many elderly people had expressed concern that their Living Alone Allowance might be cut if they provide accommodation to refugees.

In Ukraine, the Russian invasion continues amid continued shelling and missile attacks.

Volodymr Zelensky, the Ukrainian President is calling for face-to-face talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, but says his country will not surrender.

Diplomatic maneuvering will continue later this week with US President Joe Biden flying to Europe for talks with the G7, EU and NATO leaders.
