The Cabinet is to hold a special online meeting today,Tuesday as the Taoiseach and some of the government ministers have already traveled abroad for St. Patrick’s Day events.
The meeting is primarily to discuss the ongoing war in Ukraine and the implications for Ireland.
The activation of accommodation for refugees is to be discussed.
Over 20,000 offers of accommodation have been registered with the Irish Red Cross by Irish people – to date some 5,900 people have arrived from Ukraine.
The fighting continues in Ukraine as talks to arrange a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine are to resume today.
In Russia, a rare anti-war protest occurred during the main news programme on the state TV’s Channel One.
Marina Ovsyannikova, editor at Channel One walked onto the set and held up a sign in English and Russian that said: “NOWAR. Stop the war. Don’t believe propaganda. They are lying to you here.”
She has since been arrested and her legal team have been unable to find her.
