Cabinet To Consider Right To Housing Referendum Proposal

577

As the housing crisis continues the Cabinet will today discuss proposals around a referendum on the right to housing.

The Minister for Housing Darragh O’Brien is to brief the government  that the Housing Commission will establish a Referendum Subcommittee to consider the constitutional issues and propose the appropriate wording for an amendment to the Constitution.

The Coalition government committed in its programme for government to examine issues such as tenure, standards, sustainability and quality-of-life issues in the provision of housing and will consider long-term housing policy post-2030.

The Housing Commission was also tasked with bringing forward proposals for a referendum on housing.

Tipperary councillors yesterday spoke of the extent of the housing crisis in the District. Cathaoirleach Mary Hanna Hourigan says being offered HAP assistance forms to access financial support to pay for privately owned housing was useless given there was a real lack of homes available to rent in the District.
