A meeting of the National Public Health Emergency Team is scheduled for today to consider the current Covid Situation.
The meeting was announced last month on the day the government announced the lifting of most Covid Restrictions.
The main issue on the agenda is the current use of facemasks as a part of public health.
Last night An Taoiseach Micheal Martin said that NEPHET may make recommendations that would bring changes to the current situation where masks are required in retail, public transport and for certain students in schools.
The issue of an annual Covid vaccination is being considered by the NIAC.
Another expert group is to make recommendations about the criteria for test and tracing in the future management of Covid.
NEPHET are understood to be concerned about the relatively low uptake of vaccination so far among 5-11 year-olds, with over 170,000 out of an estimated 480,000 school children eligible in this age group, vaccinated to date.
Vaccination centres are to remain in place for now but in the future GPs and pharmacies would likely take over this role.
