Cllr. Michael Fitzgerald has today proposed that the Rock of Cashel be placed on a tentative list to be included in the “Royal Sites Of Ireland” as part of the World Heritage Sites under the governance of the UNESCO World Heritage Convention.
Only countries that have signed the World Heritage Convention, pledging to protect their natural and cultural heritage, can submit nomination proposals for properties on their territory to be considered for inclusion in UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
The inclusion of the Rock of Cashel on the tentative list would be the first step in UNESCO’s nomination process. In order to be deemed worthy, a proposed site must be “of outstanding universal value and meet at least one out of ten selection criteria.
In a post on social media, Cllr. Fitzgerald said that his proposal was seconded by Cllr. Roger Kennedy, and was “fully supported” by all Councillors present. Cllr. Fitzgerald went on to say that “The Rock of Cashel is the jewel in the crown of tourism in this country. Now is the time to put it on the world stage and every effort must be made by Local and National Government to achieve this status”.
