Thurles based TD, Jackie Cahill, has announced that works have been completed on the merger of Limerick and Athlone ITs into a Technological University for the Midland and Mid-West. He said that this will secure the future of third-level education in Tipperary, it will see the towns of Thurles and Clonmel being designated as University towns, and will bring with it significant investment in sports facilities for the Thurles campus.
Meanwhile, Deputy Cahill has said that he is engaging with Minister Simon Harris and Senior Management of Mary immaculate College, St. Patrick’s Campus in Thurles, to deliver a Home Economics Teacher Training Course at the Thurles Campus. This potential new course would allow students to become fully-qualified Home Economics Secondary Teachers. The course would add to the existing teacher-training courses in Thurles, who already train Secondary teachers in Irish, Business and Religious Education.
