Pavee Point, the organisation that represents members of the Travelling and Roma communities in Ireland, has said it was “shocked” and “angered” after images emerged online showing enormous crowds of people attending a funeral in Co. Leitrim on Wednesday and Thursday last.

Almost 300 mourners attended the funeral of Davey Reilly at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Carrick-On-Shannon, Co Leitrim on Thursday. Members of the Travelling Community in Carrick-On-Shannon & Longford Town were joined by relatives from Britain for the funeral.

Dozens of UK-Registered vehicles were seen in the town over the two days. Gardaí set up checkpoints on the N4 approach to the town, and on other approach roads.

Residents of the estate also erected a large marquee, which was said to be packed with people on Wednesday evening & night.

Martin Collins, from Pavee Point, said that the gathering is not acceptable in the middle of a global pandemic.
