Today will see the inauguration of a new President in the United States. Joe Biden will be installed as the 46th President and Kamala Harris will make history as the first woman to be elected as VP and appointed as President of the US Senate.
Joe Biden made an emotional speech in his home state of Delaware last night before leaving for Washington. He quoted James Joyce in his speech – Mr Biden recalled that Joyce had said that when he dies Dublin will be found written on his heart Mr Biden said that Delaware will be written on his heart.
Donald Trump will not attend the ceremony but his VP Mike Pence will attend the ceremony. The event will have strict security measures and instead of people being allowed to attend, 250,000 Stars and Stripes Flags have been placed in the Mall in front of the Capitol Building the venue for the ceremony.
Lady Gaga is set to perform the national anthem at President-elect Joe Biden’s swearing-in ceremony. The singer’s ties to Mr. Biden date back to his time as vice president, when they worked on a campaign to fight sexual assault on college campuses. Jennifer Lopez and Garth Brooks are also expected to perform at the ceremony. The ceremony will take place at 5pm Irish Time.
