The St Patrick’s Day parade in Dublin has been cancelled.
The decision was made at the meeting of the Cabinet sub-committee dealing with the coronavirus.
The decision was made shortly after Cork City cancelled its parade in response to the threat posed by Covid-19.
The decision to cancel the main parade is a significant one as it is likely that it will inform the decision many other smaller events around the country will make.
A number in Co Tipperary have already been cancelled with the Cashel event the latest to be postponed.
in light of the country’s efforts to contain Covid-19
In a statement, the event’s organisers said that the decision was made ‘in light of the country’s efforts to contain Covid-19, and taking into account the safety of both the parade entrants and the expected crowd’.
That event will be rescheduled to a later date.
Decisions are yet to be made on the fate of the Cahir and Tipperary parades.
