The Department of Justice has given the green light for Clonmel garda station to be based on the site of the old Kickham Barracks in the town.

Announcing the news locally, Fine Gael TD and Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture Tom Hayes said the project will be included as part of the next capital development plan, which will see €60 million spent on the building and refurbishment of garda stations nationally.

It’s widely agreed that the present garda station in Clonmel is no longer fit for purpose.

It was also provisionally agreed that the garda station would eventually be based on the site of the old Kickham Barracks which was decommissioned in 2012.
A plan to regenerate that site has since been drawn up and was recently presented to members of the county council.  Anchor tenants will include Limerick Institute of technology, and Tipperary Enterprise and Training Board.
The appropriate design and planning process must now be put underway.
Speaking to Tipperary Mid West this morning, Deputy Hayes, said that the project would cost around six or seven million euro and would open its doors to the public in around two years’ time.
