Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Tom Hayes has launched the Digital Recollection Project for schools.
The scheme, which operates in collaboration with the Irish Folklore commission, the Department of Education and the INTO is currently being undertaken by 12 national schools in Tipperary.
It is designed to encourage school children to collect and document folklore and local history.
The idea for the project was borne in 1937 from the National Schools Folklore Project.
These days, the project has assumed a more modern feel, with students now being provided with digital recording equipment to conduct the interviews.
Funding is provided by South Tipperary Development Company through the Rural Development Programme.
The launch of the scheme took place at Cahir House Hotel yesterday evening.
